Katy Prairie Conservancy Pre-Festival Trip – Meet at Site

April 18 @ 7:00 am - 1:00 pm
  • This event has passed.

We are very excited to offer this pre-festival trip to our FeatherFest registrants once again! Only an hour or so west of Houston, the Katy Prairie contains a wide array of habitats critical to migratory and resident birds including coastal prairie uplands, agricultural grassland, prairie and agricultural wetlands, bottomland hardwoods and wetlands, and freshwater impoundments. We plan to focus on properties that have been protected by the Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) to which the public does not generally have access.  KPC has protected 20,000 acres of open space, and its properties have been named a Global Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society.

A portion of the fee for this activity will be donated to the Katy Prairie Conservancy.

Our exact itinerary will be determined by conditions on the day of the field trip such as presence of water and occurrence of any special/interesting species.  We’ll meet out on the prairie; exact meeting location (with directions) will be provided to participants via email approximately one week prior to trip.

Special Instructions: You must sign a KPC release of liability form to get on KPC property. Please bring your signed form with you.

Targets: Among the possible species to observe are lingering winter birds such as waterfowl, Long-billed Curlew, Bald Eagle, and a variety of raptors and sparrows; migrant shorebirds and songbirds; summer nesters such as the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Cave Swallow, Painted Bunting, and Dickcissel; and residents such as waders, White-tailed Hawk, Northern Bobwhite, and Loggerhead Shrike.

Click here for a checklist of Katy Prairie birds.  One of our leaders, Bob Honig, also co-leads the Butterflies, Dragonflies, Birds – Galveston Island State Park field trip, and is the presenter of the Dragonfly Study Workshop, so we will be on the lookout for these critters as well.
